Arab Saudi, Pakistan, and Turkey have agreed to expand their defense cooperation through the signing of a pact known as the “Mecca Pact”.
The agreement was signed on Friday (8/7/2026), amid escalating security tensions in the Middle East region.
In the pact, armed attacks from external parties against any member country will be considered an attack on all three member countries.
This agreement comes at a time when the ongoing US and Israel conflict against Iran continues to impact the security of the region.
The three countries have emphasized that this pact is not directed towards any specific country, including Iran, but Tehran is closely monitoring the developments.
The initial response from the Iranian government has been relatively calm, focusing more on the importance of unity among Muslim countries.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has called on Muslim countries to strengthen solidarity and regional independence.
Araghchi expressed this view through his X account on (8/8) without directly mentioning the Mecca Pact.
Some Iranian officials view this agreement as an indicator of the diminishing influence of the US in the Persian Gulf.
According to the Director General of Parliamentary and Legal Affairs at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hossein Noushabadi, this shift in the security landscape is seen as a positive signal.
However, there has been criticism from some hardline politicians in the Iranian parliament.
They are concerned that the agreement could be used to pressure networks supported by Tehran.
A member of the National Security Commission of the Iranian Parliament, Ebrahim Azizi, warned regional countries not to miscalculate Iran.
He believes that regional security balance should be the main focus to prevent larger conflicts.
In line with the Iranian parliament members, Ebrahim Rezaei believes that cooperation with Turkey and Pakistan does not necessarily guarantee the security of Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, Chatham House analyst Sanam Vakil sees the Mecca Pact as a reflection of the pragmatic diplomacy of Riyadh, Islamabad, and Ankara.
She believes that this step is taken to address the uncertainty of US policies, Israeli maneuvers, and the potential escalation with Iran in the long term. (*)
