The spotlight is now on Thomas Djiwandono, the nephew of President Prabowo Subianto, following the news of Perry Warjiyo’s resignation from the position of Governor of Bank Indonesia.
Thomas is seen as a potential candidate to fill the position of Senior Deputy Governor at the central bank, as stated by Nailul Huda, the Director of Digital Economy at CELIOS.
Huda believes that Thomas’s chances are higher if Destry Damayanti is appointed as the definitive Governor of BI. However, CELIOS also notes that Thomas lacks deep expertise in monetary matters.
Huda expresses concern that Thomas’s close relationship with the President could lead to government intervention in BI, which may in turn destabilize the economy.
“Due to his educational background and proximity to Prabowo, Thomas’s promotion could lead to darker economic prospects,” he explained to Tribunnews.com in Solo, Central Java, on Monday (27/7/2026).
Thomas’s opportunities are wide open as the majority of DPR members come from the government coalition.
Similar concerns are echoed by Bhima Yudhistira, the Executive Director of CELIOS, who warns that political appointments in key BI positions pose a high risk to rupiah stability.
“If the President nominates his own nephew, it’s a decision with high risks. Political appointments could worsen rupiah stability,” he stated.
He emphasizes that the Senior Deputy Governor position should ideally be filled by an internal figure within the central bank.
